Sorry everyone for the blog lapse, but needless to say lots of things been going on.
First off I went to see the Cardiac Surgeon and he was so pleased with my progress, he signed me off, and I haven't even got to go back for a yearly check up. How was that for brilliant news. If I get any problems just to contact my own GP.. I can tell you we all breathed a huge sigh of relief. Just got to do as I'm told and I'll be back fighting fit. The only problem I've got at the moment is with the leg they took the vein from, it looks like it belongs to the Elephant Man. The boys have nick named it the "Cankle". Still carrying on with my physiotherapy.
I also received a wonderful get well present from Casey over at Casey's Minis. She stitched me the most wonderful miniature rug and towel set. I promise to take some pictures later when the lights better, and share them with you. All I can say is, I think with the size of the stitches, a little Witch named Tessie had a hand in them..
I've also had the clay out.. Now don't all faint at once. As you know I'm taking part in the Christmas Swap over at Rosanna's. But I can't show you the results here, in case my recipient sees. But for my friends over on Face book, they've already had a sneak peek and by the comments, it seems they are a hit! They are my first ever minis of that kind and my very first minis after my surgery, so to say I'm pleased is a bit of an understatement. I did have to get Mick to mix the clay for me though.. Thanks Mick. Now for all of you that have seen them, please don't let the cat out of the bag. This swap has given me something to focus on and hopefully in the new year, I will get back to my mini making proper.
Now to explain the heading on the top of my blog. I want to make some cages, now does anyone know where I can get miniature Chicken wire from. I thought I might be able to use Tulle, but worried this may not be strong enough. Have any of you got any ideas? Any help greatly received.. xx
Hi Debbie, how nice to see you. Lea Frisone uses tule but she covers it with acrilic paint to make it thicker and stronger. She uses up to two coats of paint. I've seen her works and it really looks stiff and quite robust. I'm so glad about your heart progress and I'm confident that the therapy will make your leg as slim as it used to be in no time. ReplyDeleteAs for the chicken wire... have you thought of using metal screen? I'm sitting here right now looking out my window and the screen looks to be the perfect size?

Hi Debbie! I bought some tulle for the same thing! I found some that is thicker and has a little bigger holes. If you don't find anything, let me know and I can send you some!

first off...so glad to hear the doctor says your doing better!! Debbie, Don't you over do it now, or you'll make a bunch of miniaturists mad! We've missed you too much!! And I am soooo happy to hear that you've had the clay out! Can't wait to see whta you've been doing:)
ReplyDeleteAs far as the chicken wire goes.....what about that plastic bag stuff that comes around bags of fruit?? Know what I'm talking about, if not I could find a pic?? You could always paint it to make it the color you want it.

As for the elephanr leg...it'll take a little time for collateral vessels to take over the job of the big one they used as a graft but it'll happen.So glad to see you back to mini-ing!

ReplyDeleteFruit bags... hmmm, in the material shop they have netting which comes up a bit smaller than the netting on the bags and it could maybe work.
ReplyDeleteBut i reckon tulle like you mentioned as an idea could be more rustic looking to match your eyelops.
I have been looking but come up with nothing so far suitable as a metal mesh yet.

Great news from the surgeon, now you just need to get that leg back to normal size again. I'm really pleased for you, and the boys. I bet they are happy to see you using the clay again - I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

I don't know where to find it in your area but I can give you some keywords for your search and some size specifications too.
ReplyDeleteMesh is one of the keywords.
Hex and Hexagonal are other keywords.
Next is how they size these items for industrial catalog standards. The size is determined by the number of openings per inch. So if you had #4 mesh it would have 1/4" openings. If you had #100 mesh there would be 100 openings per inch.
Real chicken wire comes with one inch or two inch openings. So if you could find a #6 mesh it would look just right. You will easily be able to find it with a square weave, I could not find a hex weave that size.
Now don't think I am a strange woman for knowing this stuff, I have worked in manufacturing industries since I was young and I do web searches for materials as part of that work.
Dear Debbie, It is so good to see you posting again! And the great report card from the docs must surely be the best X'mas present! The person who receives your swap is a lucky lucky one for the special significance of this gift.

ReplyDeleteas for the chicken wire - I dont know if youve thought of this one yet, but how about chopping up an old metal sieve? I had one that needed throwing out as it was getting a bit threadbare and being the hoarding scavenger that I am used it on a chook shed and it looked ok. and it fits the measurements Karin Corbin suggested too :o)

ReplyDeleteHmmm miniature chicken wire....I'd use tulle like you suggested and paint it. I have this extremely fine metal wire mesh....I will have a look tomorrow to see if I can actually find out what it is! I know I've seen something similar (maybe it was a fine wire patterned ribbon) on my looking for mini's travels! lol
